This web site was built in 2005 at the Centre for Digital Humanities Innovation [CDHI] at Vancouver Island University (formerly known as Malaspina University-College) in Nanaimo, ninety kilometres north of Victoria. Ryan Sutton, a CDHI research assistant and graduate of Vancouver Island University, contributed significantly to this projct. Ryan painstakingly "stitched" the historical images together to create a 360 degree panoramic view of Victoria. He created our Quicktime faux video fly-over, image maps and hot spots. Kathryn Lancashire, a graphic designer and graduate of the Malaspina Graphic Arts Program, created the banner and menu bar. The project was facilitated by Marshall Soules, former director of the CDHI, and a grant from the Malaspina Research Fund. (Dr. Soules is retired from VIU and the CDHI is now called the Media Research Lab.) Many historical images featured here — including the dye-sublimation prints used in the panorama — were provided by the Royal British Columbia Museum, BC Archives. I acknowledge gratefully the resources of the BC Archives. Victoria photographer Mark Whitehead made a new series of digital images from the dye-sub prints. The digital images Mark created are the building blocks of this site: His contributions are greatly appreciated. I am also grateful to Lucas Caldicott, verger of St. Andrew's Cathedral, who identified the vantage points of the original photographs and allowed me to climb to the top of the steeple. The view from the steeple is spectacular! This web site was updated in December 2012. Patrick A. Dunae, Ph.D |
