Address: 720 Pembroke Street
Built:c. 1904
1912 householder: John M. Tefler, cigar store ownerThis building is gone! It was demolished in May 2015, about 3 years after this photograph was taken. The site is now a parking lot for an adjacent property at 722 Pembroke Street. But here is a description of the building as it was in 2012, for the record:
This early Edwardian cottage has a hipped roof with a prominent, corbelled brick chimney. There is a gable over its front angled box window, and the front door is covered by a small pent roof. A plumbing permit was issued for this property in May 1904 but the house may have been built earlier.
Lewis Evans was one of the first residents. He was employed as a clerk in 1907 but the next year was hired as “steward's bookkeeper” at the brand new Empress Hotel.
In 1911, this was the home of a 53 year old Scottish widow, Elizabeth McDonald, and her 29 year old daughter, Elizabeth. They had immigrated to Canada in 1907.
John M. Tefler was living here in 1912. He owned a cigar store at 542 Johnson Street.
