Address: 3082 Washington Avenue
Built: 1906
1912 householder: Thomas Hastings, policemanThis building is gone! It was demolished in 2022 and replaced with a large townhouse complex that includes an adjacent property at 3080 Washington Avenue. For the record, here is a description of the building at 3082 Washington Avenue as it was in 2012:
This address was previously known as 3102 Washington. The house was built in 1906 by the firm of Moore & Whittington. A septic tank permit for the property was issued on 21 June 1906.
The house is now entirely covered in stucco and is painted a non-descript beige colour. But some interesting building design elements are still evident. It has a full width wraparound porch, an octagonal bay window with coloured art glass transom windows, and front facing steps leading from the left corner of the porch. It has a hipped, bellcast roof with dormers on the front and sides, and a splendid (but decaying) corbelled brick chimney.
This house sits on ½ acre lot. The back yard is covered with mature fruit trees. When this house was built, ½ acre lots on Washington Avenue, all cleared and fenced, sold for $1,500. Terms: $200 cash, balance in 3 payments of $400 over 18 month period.
The first owner, Thomas Hastings, was a Victoria City policeman. His deputy chief, Thomas Palmer, also resided in the neighbourhood - at 739 Kings Road and later at 3164 Balfour Avenue.
