3080 Washington Avenue

Address: 3080 Washington Avenue
Built: 1914
Householder: William McKay, school janitor

This building is gone! It was demolished in 2022, about 10 years after this photograph was taken, and replaced with a large townhouse complex that includes an adjacent property at 3082 Washington Avenue. Here is a description of the building as it was in 2012, for the record:

The building permit for this house was issued on 24 March 1914, so the building falls outside the chronological range of our heritage project. However, it is nestled between two houses on our heritage inventory and the owner, William McKay, was the janitor of Burnside School. He lived here with his wife, Frances, and their two sons. The four-room house was built at a cost of only $1,000. It was always a very modest structure and, compared to its neighbour at 3070 Washington Avenue, it is very plain. Still, it has some interesting features, such as the decorative woodwork in the front windows.

The house sits on a ½ acre lot. Most of the property is now cultivated in a wonderul garden. The tenants who live here and tend the garden sell their organic vegetables on a street-side stand on weekends and donate produce to the Burnside Gorge Community Centre and local charities, such as the Rainbow Kitchen.
