Address: 737 Princess Avenue
Built: 1910
1912 householder: William Smith, cabinet makerThis simple and authentic Edwardian vernacular-style house was built sometime before November 1910, when a plumbing permit was issued for the property. The small inset porch on the left corner was originally open and is now enclosed and the side facing steps are not original. The twin house at 741 Princess Avenue has had fewer renovations, so we can see some of the original features. There is a small box bay on the front of the house and a double-hung sash window in the front gable. The gable is covered with shingles, while the main level is clad in double-drop board siding.
In 1912, this was the home of William R. Smith, a cabinet maker employed by Woodworkers Ltd. The Woodworkers' office and production yard was located on Douglas Street and Market Street. Several other Woodworkers' employees lived in the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood. The manager of the company, Robert McKinney, lived in a fancier home at 2531 Government Street.
