478 Burnside Road East

Address: 478 Burnside Road East
Built: 1910-1913
Householder: Edward Vaughan, carpenter

This building is gone! It was demolished in February 2013, a few months after this photograph was taken. But here is a description of the building as it was in 2012, for the record:

This small cottage was built in two stages: the section on the north or left side was built in 1910 and the larger section, with the front door and double sash windows and front gable was built in 1913. Building permits were issued to the owner, Edward Vaughan, who was a carpenter. He may have erected the house by himself.

Although it is exceedingly modest, there are some delightful features in the design elements of the building. The features include curved top frames on the front windows, “bird's mouth” barge boards and exposed rafter tails. The building is clad with cedar shingles, with the main floor and basement levels defined by a belly board. Remarkably, it still has wooden eaves troughs!

When the household was enumerated in June 1911, Edward Vaughan was 42 years old. He was born in England and came to Canada in 1890. Harriet Vaughan, 41 years old, came to Canada from England in 1903. Their daughter, Dorris, who was also called Doris, was 10 years old. She was born in BC. The census indicates that young Doris was enrolled in school. She was probably attending North Ward School in 1911, but a few years later she may have transferred to newly-built Burnside School, which opened in 1913. Located on Jutland Road (then called Oliver Avenue), Burnside Elementary School was very close to the Vaughan family home.

Buildings along this portion of Burnside Road East were renumbered by the City of Victoria in 1944. This residence, originally known as 506 Burnside Road East, became 478 Burnside Road East. The larger residence to the north, formerly 504 Burnside Road East, became 474 Burnside Road East . These two houses are among the few survivors of the many family homes that once stood in this part of the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.
