3127 Balfour

Address: 3127 Balfour Avenue
Built: 1912-1913
Householder: George H. Evans, jeweller

Construction on this house began in 1912 and was completed in 1913.

This Edwardian-era dwelling has a recessed porch and verandah on the right side, with an octagonal bay window on the left side. The front bay window is protected by a small gable. The main front gable has a small shed-dormer with timber frame accents. There is a box bay window on the right hand side of the house. Steps lead up from the right to the front door, which is angled towards the porch. Although the house has been stuccoed and original doors and windows have been replaced, the Edwardian character is still evident in this place.

The first occupant was George H. Evans, a jeweller. He had previously lived at 1348 Hillside Avenue (a few blocks outside the eastern boundary of the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood). The 1913 directory indicates that Evans was manager of the firm of Charles Redfern & Son, jewellers, watchmakers and diamond merchants. Evans and his widowed mother, Mrs. Annie Evans, lived in this Balfour Avenue home until the mid-1920s.
