Address: 3126 Balfour Avenue
Built: 1912
1912 householder: George T. Hughes, clothing salesmanThis 1½ storey house combines architectural characteristics of the early Edwardian Colonial bungalow with later Edwardian-era Craftsmen-style elements. It has a hipped, bellcast roof with a front dormer. It has a corner entry porch, with a front octagonal bay window and a box bay window on the right (east) side. The front stairs have a single balustrade on the left (west) side.
The house was designed and erected by David H. Bale, one of Victoria's most prolific building contractors. Bale's name is on the water permit, issued 30 March 1912, for this property. This dwelling is similar in design to a residence Bale built at 3050 Carroll Street and residences he constructed in Fairfield and Fernwood during this period.
This was the Hughes family home. George T. Hughes was a salesman and window dresser for the long-established clothing firm of W. & J. Wilson on Government Street. He and his wife Marion Elizabeth Hughes lived in this house, where they raised two sons and a daughter, for thirty years. They were still at this address in 1943, but in 1944 they had moved to Bowker Avenue in Oak Bay.
